Competition Information

Each semester, UTIG hosts an electronic trading competition, giving UT students hands-on experience managing securities:
  • Each student is given a $100,000 mock portfolio to manage over approximately 8+ weeks.
  • A minimum of 10 trades is required (each buy or sell leg counts as one trade, and "round trip" orders count as two).
  • Trading on margin, short selling, and options are all permitted—and encouraged.
  • Only certain membership packages entitle you to join the competition and win prizes—select carefully.
  • Cash prizes are awarded to the top 3 winners each semester: $200 for 1st, $150 for 2nd, and $100 for 3rd.
  • To claim prizes, students must attend at least one meeting and be present in person at the awards ceremony during the final meeting to explain the success or failure of their trading strategy and the lessons learned.

  4. Trading begins at 9:30 AM EST on Friday, August 29.
  5. Trading ends at 4:00 PM EST on Friday, November 21.
  6. The Trading Awards Ceremony will be held at 3:00 PM EST on Wednesday, December 3 in the MILC.
